Liposuction is typically associated with fat removal on the stomach, flanks, arms, and thighs — places where excess bulk is almost always unwanted. But there’s another place where excess fat can accumulate as well: the neck and chin area. In fact, when it comes to liposuction, neck and chin lipo can often achieve the most stunning and remarkable before and afters you’ve ever seen.
What Is Chin and Neck Liposuction?
Neck and chin liposuction is a cosmetic surgery that removes what is most commonly called a “double chin” — basically excess fat beneath the chin and along the neck.
The procedure, which may also be referred to as submental liposuction, works wonders at creating a more defined jaw and neckline. And it’s often the only thing than can be done to improve the appearance of this area, which is normally unchangeable with even the strictest diet and exercise plans.
Chin and Neck Lipo Procedure
The chin and neck liposuction procedure is a straightforward cosmetic surgery that only requires a few small incisions and a short time in the operating room.
First, your plastic surgeon will use anesthesia to make you comfortable. Local anesthesia with sedation is often used for this procedure, but sometimes, general anesthesia may be used.
Several small incisions will be made around the neck and chin. Typically, one incision is made directly beneath the chin where most people have a slight indent and shadow. Sometimes, two more incisions are made — one behind each ear.
A small liposuction cannula is used to suction out fat cells during a chin liposuction procedure. This small metal tube is gently inserted into the incisions, and your surgeon will perform neck contouring suction for under chin fat removal of just the right amount of fat in just the right areas.
Once all of the unwanted fat has been taken out, your surgeon will carefully close each incision. Then, you will be taken to a recovery room where we’ll make sure you’re doing well before you are discharged to return home and begin the chin lipo recovery process.
Who Is a Good Candidate for Neck Liposuction?
Most patients who qualify for liposuction in neck and chin locations are those who simply have excess bulk in this area due to genetics. Occasionally, the issue of a double chin may be caused or exacerbated by fat accumulation due to skin aging or weight fluctuations.
Still, do remember that liposuction on the chin/neck is only for excess fat — not for loose skin. In fact, you should have good skin elasticity before undergoing this surgical procedure, and this is why most people who get lipo are younger patients.
If you desire removing excess skin on your neck and jaw area due to aging or weight fluctuations, neck lift surgery (or a comparable facial plastic surgery) can help with removing loose skin and tightening the neck muscles. But lipo might actually make the loose neck skin worse.
Overall, the requirements that plastic surgeons look for in chin liposuction patients include:
- Good overall physical health
- Stable healthy weight
- Good elasticity of the skin
- No smoking prior to or after surgery during neck liposuction recovery
- Enough submental fatty tissue to warrant chin liposuction
- Realistic expectations of neck liposuction results
Neck Liposuction Cost
Neck lift procedures and chin liposuction cost depends largely on who your surgeon is, what type of anesthesia you have (local anesthetic or general anesthesia), who your anesthesiologist is, the geographic location of your surgeon’s practice, and the extent of facial liposuction you are getting.
Many patients feel they need to know the cost of their surgery before they move forward. And while we certainly understand the importance of financing this surgery, it’s also important to remember that who your surgeon is will determine the outcome of your surgery.
Do not make the mistake of choosing a surgeon who charges very little but is not qualified and experienced with this procedure.

FAQ: Neck Liposuction
What’s the difference between neck liposuction and a chin implant?
Neck liposuction removes unwanted fat from beneath the chin to change neck contour.
A chin augmentation (chin implant) enhances the size of the chin to make it more prominent or change the shape.
What can fix a turkey neck?
Most patients who have a “turkey neck” will need neck surgery to significantly improve sagging skin in this area. This typically means a neck lift procedure, not liposuction (liposuction removes excess fat under the chin & neck area, not neck skin).
Is neck lipo worth it?
It’s true that any type of plastic surgery is an investment — in both money and time. However, the vast majority of patients who get neck lipo say that, yes, it is definitely worth the chin liposuction cost. Only lipo can remove unwanted fat from the chin area.
Often, patients are in excellent health, have a healthy BMI, and take care of themselves through diet and exercise, but still, they have fat beneath their chins. In this case, neck lipo is really the only viable solution.
What is double chin surgery?
Double chin surgery, also known as submental liposuction or neck liposuction, is a cosmetic procedure that removes excess fat and tightens skin in the neck and chin area to create a more defined jawline and reduce the appearance of a double chin.
