Gynecomastia: Many men struggle with enlarged tissue on the chest — often called “man boobs” — despite a consistently healthy diet and regular strenuous exercise.
In fact, gynecomastia is a perfectly normal condition that many men are forced to deal with. It often has nothing to do with your body weight, your body mass index, your muscle mass, or how much you exercise.
If you have swollen breast tissue that you’d like to have removed, male breast reduction surgery can help. Use this guide to orient yourself to the condition and what breast reduction surgery will involve if you decide to move forward.
Gynecomastia is a condition that affects young men, adult men, and some young boys. Most often, the symptoms include excess tissue in both breasts. The male breasts will be rounded, and sometimes a crease will be created beneath one or both breasts because of the extra tissue.
The condition of gynecomastia can be particularly distressing for many men who would like to have a flat, muscular chest. Going shirtless is often a problem, and some men find that they can’t wear tight clothing without feeling self-conscious.
Other symptoms of gynecomastia include pain or tenderness on the chest, nipple discharge, and overall swelling. These are the biggest telltale signs of this condition. Some men feel what seems like a rubbery lump beneath the skin as well — especially beneath the nipple. These symptoms may occur on one or both breasts.
Most gynecomastia is treated with liposuction. This is the case for individuals who simply have excess tissue that is primarily made up of fat. The liposuction process dislodges the excess fat and removes it by aspiration through a metal tube called a cannula.
With the liposuction technique, anesthesia will first be administered to the patient. Small incisions will then be made around the breast, and the cannula will be inserted into these incisions where it will be moved back and forth to gently agitate the fat. Once the excess fat has been dislodged, it can be removed via the cannula by vacuum suction. The incisions will then be closed. Gynecomastia surgery is generally an outpatient procedure, so the patient will be able to return home directly after surgery.
In some cases, a different approach to treat gynecomastia surgery will be used: The excision technique. The excision technique is used when glandular breast tissue and/or excess skin has to be removed in order to achieve a flatter chest profile. This is also a procedure that will be used if the nipple needs to be repositioned and/or if the areola will be reduced in size.
Often times, the two approaches are combined. Both liposuction and excision often create an aesthetic outcome, with the incision hidden in the areola. If there are extremely large amounts of tissue and ptosis (sagging) of the nipple, excision with a skin graft of the nipple will be performed.
Many of these decisions will be made during your consultation appointment. At this appointment, you can speak with Dr. Ashley Steinberg about your goals for surgery — for example, if you feel that your areolas are too large and you would like to have their size reduced.
Directly after your surgery, before you leave for home, you’ll have a chance to discuss the procedure with Dr. Ashley Steinberg. She will tell you how it went and give you some basic instructions for recovering from this procedure at home.
These instructions are extremely important, so be sure to follow them closely. If you fail to properly follow the healing instructions given to you, you risk exacerbating the scars on your chest and possibly causing problems with the healing process. This will not only be dangerous, but it may also compromise the results you surely desire.
Generally speaking, you can expect some bruising, swelling, and pain or discomfort during the first few days of your recovery period. You should watch for internal chest pains, extreme swelling, shortness of breath, or feelings of an unusual heartbeat. If any of these symptoms arrive, be sure to seek medical attention right away.
For other, standard symptoms, Dr. Ashley Steinberg will prescribe pain medication and the use of compression garments, which can help to reduce swelling and fluid buildup. In some cases, surgical site drains may be used.
In addition to following at-home recovery instructions, you will also meet with Dr. Ashley Steinberg for several postoperative appointments. As you progress through these appointments, the doctor will let you know when you can return to normal activities, such as work or school, exercise, and more.
For at least the first few weeks of your recovery, you are not to take part in strenuous physical activities.
Can you get other procedures along with your gynecomastia surgery?
Yes. If you are interested in liposuction on other parts of your body, a tummy tuck, a facelift, or any other cosmetic surgery, speak with Dr. Steinberg about these procedures at your consultation appointment.
How much does male breast reduction surgery Houston cost?
Everyone’s situation is different, so there’s no one price that we can give you for how much male breast reduction surgery will cost. Still, we can give you a ballpark figure. For the majority of patients who only need breast reduction surgery, the price will be from $4500-$7500.
Is male breast reduction surgery permanent?
Yes, when you get male breast reduction surgery, the results should last for a lifetime. Keep in mind, however, that if the excess tissue on the breasts was caused by fat, gaining weight in the future may cause some of the fat in the breast area to return. Still, whatever was removed during surgery will be forever gone. Furthermore, if the initial problem was glandular, even if you gain weight, you should not experience a return of gynecomastia as it was prior to your surgery.
What causes Gynecomastia
Gynecomastia is triggered by a decrease in the amount of the hormone testosterone compared with estrogen. The decrease can be caused by conditions that block the effects of testosterone, reduce testosterone or increase your estrogen level.
If you have been struggling with excess tissue on the breasts, you’re not alone.
A large percentage of men struggle with this issue and are unsure where to go for a resolution. Male breast reduction surgery is a simple surgery that is highly safe and effective. If you would like to have the excess tissue and skin on your breasts removed for good, this is the procedure for you.
