After pregnancy and childbirth, some mothers are interested in vaginal rejuvenation, which refers to several surgical and non-surgical procedures to enhance the appearance and function of the labia major and labia minor.
Some of the most popular procedures include vaginoplasty, labiaplasty, and others, which many women want with breast augmentation. These surgical options have gained popularity recently as effective ways to improve the appearance and function of the female genitalia.
Why Vaginal Rejuvenation?
Women who want vaginal rejuvenation may be displeased with their anatomy’s sexual function or appearance. However, for many patients, these procedures offer relief from annoying symptoms that affect how their genitalia function after childbirth or aging.
However, many patients want vaginal rejuvenation for cosmetic reasons to feel more comfortable with themselves and their partners. Vaginal rejuvenation also can enhance sexual sensations for some patients.
If you have been thinking about vaginal rejuvenation, you are hardly alone. These procedures have become more popular, and it’s estimated that at least 10,000 labiaplasties were done in 2017, even though it’s a relatively new procedure.
What Are The Options?
There are many procedures you can have to improve the appearance and function of the female genitalia. Labiaplasty and vaginoplasty are the best-known procedures, but others could help you, too.
These cosmetic procedures are usually broken into three different types:
- Surgical inner vaginal rejuvenation
- Surgical outer vaginal rejuvenation
- Non-surgical vaginal rejuvenation
Benefits Of Vaginal Rejuvenation
The female genitals can go through many changes during aging, weight loss, and childbirth. The many vaginal rejuvenation options can enhance the health, function, and appearance of the female genitalia.
Vaginal rejuvenation can reverse physical changes to the labia, vaginal canal, vaginal wall, and the pelvic floor. These procedures can address loose muscles in the vagina as well as an elongated labia.
Tightened vaginal muscles can improve bladder issues and make the genitalia look more attractive.
In procedures that are only cosmetic, the woman may feel more self-confident with a tighter and more attractive inner or outer labia. These procedures also can enhance sexual satisfaction in the women and her partner.
Most Common Vaginal Rejuvenation Procedures
Below are several vaginal rejuvenation procedures the surgeon may consider for you:
Vaginoplasty
Tightens your vaginal canal after it is loose or lax from aging or childbirth. This procedure removes extra vaginal skin and tighens the muscles for improved sexual function.
Perineoplasty
The perineum is skin tissue that goes from the vagina to the anus that can be torn during childbirth. This procedure can remove some of this extra tissue and tighten the posterior muscles. It also can be combined with a vaginoplasty for best results
A perineoplasty may reduce a loose feeling in the perineum as well as enhance the function and look of the female genitalia. This procedure may be recommended for women who don’t have vaginal laxity but want to improve and repair the aesthetic appearance and sexual function.
Hymenoplasty
This surgery is designed to repair the hymen, which in some cultures may be desirable for the women to experience ‘virginity’ again.
This can be due to social pressure to remove some of their sexual history or a way to have closure after sexual assault. Some women simply want to feel what it is like to be ‘intact’ again.
Labiaplasty
The outer and inner vaginal lips are called the labia majora and labia minora. In labiaplasty, the extra tissue are trimmed from the labia majora and minora. This may give the vagina a more attractive appearance as well as remove labia tissue that causes irritation and discomfort.
Women with a labia that is too long may have difficulty wearing snug clothing, riding a bike, or exercising.
Clitoral Hood Reduction
This procedure may be performed with a labiaplasty. The surgeon removes a wedge of skin from the clitoral hood to reduce its size. This also may expose more of the clitoris to enhance sexual pleasure.
Monoplasty
This procedure reduces the amount of skin that is over the mons pubis. It is often done on patients who recently lost weight or have a lot of fat and extra tissue on the upper pubic area.
Labia Augmentation With Dermal Fillers
Another option is to augment and increase the size of the labia with fat transfer or dermal fillers. This procedure is done to reduce vaginal sagging and wrinkling.
Ideal Candidates For Vaginal Rejuvenation
The best candidates for vaginal rejuvenation procedures are in good overall health and have realistic expectations about what a surgeon can do for them.
For those who want inner surgical vaginal rejuvenation, symptoms may include vaginal looseness, sagging, incontinence, and lack of sexual sensitivity during intercourse. Some of these patients may also have difficulty wearing a tampon during menstruation.
Patients who want outer vaginal rejuvenation or non-surgical procedures may have discomfort and irritation because of an elongated or enlarged labia. For example, an enlarged labia may rub on clothing or get pulled and tugged, leading to extreme discomfort.
Other patients may notice feeling dissatisfaction with how their vagina looks, which can cause lowered self-esteem.
However, there are some patients who are not good candidates for these procedures. For example, if you have difficulty having an orgasm or have a low libido, you should talk to your doctor about other options.
There are many vaginal rejuvenation options, so talk to your surgeon about what may be best for you.
