If you’ve ever tried to hide a double chin with a turtleneck or strategically placed scarf, you’re not alone. Millions of men and women struggle with the frustration and embarrassment of having a double chin, and unfortunately, creams, serums, and massage practices (despite their claims) can do little to help. Even with intense diet and exercise to reduce overall body fat, it’s often not possible to lose fat in specific areas like the jaw line and neck.
Because of this, patients often turn to a plastic surgeon for answers. They want to know how to get rid of double chin fat — and fortunately, there’s good news. A procedure called submental liposuction can help. Also referred to as double chin surgery or chin liposuction, the procedure aims to remove excess fat through the use of liposuction, much in the same way that excess fat can be removed from the abdomen or upper arms with liposuction.
The results from this procedure are noticeable very quickly, and the ultimate change in your facial appearance can be incredible.
What Is Submental Liposuction?
Also known as chin liposuction, submental liposuction is a minimally invasive surgical procedure intended to reduce fat in the neck and jaw area and provide contour and definition. This can reduce or eliminate the appearance of a double chin (excess fat and skin on the neck). The procedure involves liposuction, a technique that uses small incisions and suction to remove fat deposits.
Who Is a Good Candidate for Submental Liposuction?
The best candidates for submental liposuction are in good overall physical health and not actively ill or dealing with serious preexisting medical conditions. Most good candidates maintain a healthy weight and have already tried to lose stubborn fat naturally with a healthy diet and exercise.
It’s best to be a non-smoker. Having firm, elastic skin and good overall muscle tone is also beneficial. Finally, the patient must have reasonable expectations in regards to the results of their surgery.
What Are My Options for Submental Liposuction?
Those who struggle with submental fullness (excess fat, skin, and muscle along the chin, neck, and jaw line) have several options when it comes to treatment. Undoubtedly, the best treatments are available through plastic surgery. Despite claims, store-bought and prescription topical creams and serums cannot treat this problem, nor can chin strap devices or massage or lymphatic drainage techniques.
Chin liposuction is the most popular course of treatment to correct a double chin. Chin liposuction as a solo procedure targets excess fat. However, it cannot improve excess sagging skin. For this compound issue, patients have several other options. For instance, chin liposuction is often combined with other surgical procedures intended to improve the appearance of the chin, jaw line, and neck. Neck lifts and face lifts are the most common (more on these below). In order to decide which of these procedures will benefit you, if any, Dr. Steinberg will need to see you for a consultation appointment.
Finally, some patients have found success with injectables or fillers. These patients generally have only a mild-to-moderate amount of unwanted fat near their chin and jaw line. Injectables like Kybella can help break down fat, which will eventually be eliminated by your own body. Again, Kybella and other injectables are generally only recommended for mild double chin issues.
If you have excess skin on your neck and jaw line (in addition to excess fat), Dr. Steinberg may recommend one of the following in combination with submental liposuction:
Also called a lower rhytidectomy, a neck lift is a surgical procedure that targets loose skin on the neck and jawline, as well as abnormal contours that may have formed due to muscle banding.
Also known as (traditional) rhytidectomies, face lifts literally lift the skin of the face by gently pulling back one flap of skin on either side of the face and removing the excess. Your surgeon will also adjust the tissues located beneath the skin in order to improve the general contours of your face and provide a smoother, fresher appearance.
What to Expect at Your Consultation?
Before scheduling your submental liposuction surgery, you must meet with Dr. Steinberg for a consultation appointment. This preliminary appointment will help both you and Dr. Steinberg understand your needs for surgery and qualifications as a potential candidate.
When discussing candidacy, be prepared to talk about any medical conditions you may have, including recent or current medical treatments or conditions, allergies to drugs, and previous surgeries. Also, be sure to bring a list of any medications, supplements, or vitamins you are currently taking.
Physical Exam and Treatment Options
Dr. Steinberg will also perform a physical evaluation and take measurements of your face at your consultation appointment. She will take a close look at your chin and jaw line and likely take photos as well. Generally speaking, you’ll be able to be presented with a recommendation for the best course of treatment at your appointment. However, in some cases, Dr. Steinberg may need to get back with you regarding recommendations.
At your appointment, Dr. Steinberg will also discuss the potential complications and risks associated with the treatment options available to you, including details about the surgery itself. In some cases, you’ll have more than one option for treatment available, and Dr. Steinberg can present the pros and cons of each one.
Be sure to bring a list of questions and concerns with you to your appointment. Throughout the appointment, don’t hesitate to ask for clarification on any element of the procedure or related topics. It’s important that you fully understand your course of treatment and what you’ll be responsible for during preparation and recovery, in order to ensure optimal results.
Some questions you may have regarding this procedure include:

What to Expect During Submental Liposuction Surgery?
Submental liposuction works in much the same way as traditional liposuction on any other part of the body.
Once you arrive at the surgical location, you will meet with Dr. Steinberg who will perform a final examination and make several strategic markings on your neck and jaw line with a pen. These will be used as references for the doctor during your surgery.
Your skin will then be thoroughly cleansed, and an antiseptic solution will be applied to help avoid infection risks. From there, anesthesia will be administered in order to numb the area and improve your overall comfort during the procedure. Submental liposuction does not typically require general anesthesia. Most of the procedures can be performed with only local anesthesia. If you prefer sedation during the treatment, this may be an option as well.
Once the anesthesia has been administered, Dr. Steinberg will make several small incisions around the target area. She will then insert a cannula into the incisions that is attached to a suctioning mechanism. Cannulas are thin metal tubes that are hollow inside. With slight agitation and gentle suction, Dr. Steinberg will use the inserted cannula to remove a discreet amount of fat from the chin and jaw line area. Dr. Steinberg knows exactly which fat deposits to target and how much fat to remove in order to facilitate an improved appearance that still looks natural. The results will be smooth, contoured, and even.
What to Expect During Recovery?
Understandably, patients want to know what to expect after chin liposuction. Generally speaking, recovery from submental liposuction is short and __
After your surgery, Dr. Steinberg will apply the necessary bandaging and a chin strap. In some cases, drains may be used to reduce the buildup of fluid and overall swelling. However, some swelling, bruising, and discomfort is to be expected after surgery. Your face may also feel tight for a few days.
From here, the timeline will largely depend on which procedure and/or supplemental procedural options you choose to undergo. A more complicated surgery will naturally require a longer recovery period. In general, however, a basic chin liposuction procedure will allow you to return to work in about three days to a week post-surgery. You will meet with Dr. Steinberg one or more times during this period, and she will examine the progress of your results and remove the bandages as needed. Wait until Dr. Steinberg okays you to return to work and normal activity. Not doing so could diminish your results.
What Are the Possible Risks and Complications of Submental Liposuction?
Submental liposuction is a generally safe and risk-free surgery. However, as with any surgical procedure, there are always risks and possible side effects to be aware of. Dr. Steinberg will discuss these with you at your consultation appointment. Be sure to ask any questions you may have in regards to this topic.
Some risks and possible complications associated with double chin surgery include:
- Excess bleeding
- Anesthesia-related complications
- Decreased sensitivity around the skin near the surgical site
- Overall discomfort
- Asymmetry of features
Submental Liposuction Houston: Frequently Asked Questions
Here are some of the most frequently asked questions we receive about how to remove double chin fat through submental liposuction.
How much is double chin surgery?
The cost of double chin surgery depends largely on the specifics of your procedure. Are you undergoing liposuction alone, or have you opted for a neck and/or face lift as well? Overall, a surgery targeting excess fat and/or skin around the jaw line and neck will cost anywhere from $1,200 to $12,700.
Does health insurance cover double chin surgery?
Generally speaking, most health insurance companies will not cover cosmetic surgeries like chin liposuction.
How will I know what to expect after chin liposuction?
Recovery from chin liposuction is fairly straightforward. There will be some discomfort, bruising, and swelling during the initial period of one to two weeks post-surgery. The symptoms will be stronger and more apparent if your surgery involved additional procedures such as a neck lift or face lift.
I should have to wait how long to see results from chin liposuction?
The results from your chin liposuction should appear relatively quickly. That’s because the liposuction process permanently removes the fat right away. What may cover your results for at least a few days, however, is the swelling that’s common after a procedure like this.
After liposuction, swelling and some discoloration and bruising are completely normal. In some cases, your surgeon will also use drains to help keep the swelling to a minimum. These drains will be removed after a few days.
Once the swelling goes down, you’ll begin to see a slimmer and smoother chin and neck area beneath your bandaging almost right away. These results will only become more apparent with time.
Will I have scars from double chin removal?
Liposuction does require making several small incisions in and around the neck and chin area, and this will inevitably result in a few small, barely noticeable scars. Your surgeon is well-adept at making incisions in discreet areas and closing them carefully, so in nearly all cases, scars won’t be in plain sight.
One thing to keep in mind if you are concerned about post-surgery scars is how you care for the affected area after surgery. By carefully following the recovery care instructions given to you by Dr. Steinberg, you’ll drastically reduce your chances of having noticeable scars.
